Couple weeks of different @shotoversystems #g1 applications. Different day, different challenge.

Inaugural flight with the @arricamera #35 on the @sec.swiss #eagle eye and @shotoversystems #G1. I have to admit there something unnerving about flying a couple hundred grand a foot over a pool for a couple hours...

The best part of my job is getting a call to do something super technically challenging that blends in seamlessly to help tell a story. For this @umbrellaacad shot with the @wfw_intl @techno_supertechno_technodolly shot the idea was to blend 24fps bg into a shot that starts at 24 and ramps to 48 mid way through with the camera appearing to move at the same rate of speed throughout. Doing a 24 and 48 fps pass is a click of the button but massaging a ramp and matching the bg plates was different. With a bit of math and knowing how the technodolly responds it was up to post to blend the passes. By the time I left the location I saw a 90% comp and knew it was going to work. The shot, the scene and the show looks amazing.

Repost from @cwrobleski This shot, from episode 7 of Umbella Academy, is one of my favourites of the season. The scene involves Lila happily playing with her band at a club and, mid-song, she thinks she sees Diego in the crowd. It rattles her and, for a moment, she is pulled back into the life she ran away from.

The shot was made more complicated by the fact that we had to get the heavy and cumbersome Technodolly crane down the narrow stairs into the small basement club we shot in. Doing slow-motion and real time versions of the shot seemed simple in my head but was incredibly complex to figure out mathematically and I credit Mike Darby, the grip team and Everett Burrell and his VFX posse for figuring all that stuff out.

Doing a motion control shot also gave us the ability to fill the club with people. This was shot in the pandemic and we weren't allowed to bring in enough background performers to fill the club. Shooting multiple passes of the shot enabled us to move our small number of background around to fill up the club once the shots were combined in post.

Shots like this are difficult to do in a TV schedule and I credit and thank Everett, our assistant directors and the entire team for pulling it off.

Hopefully the shot grabs the audience visually and emotionally🤞

In order to capture the spectacle of Marco Inaros’ demise; we turned to the talents of @trickedoutpictures to program the Whites’ #technodolly that we managed to cram into our Pella flight deck. It was literally packed in to the inch. Director @breckeisner worked out the timing in this BTS rehearsal with @iamkeonalexander . We ran the Alexa Mini at 60fps and also used a Sigma 18-35 zoom, we started the move on an 18 and ended on a 35, its pretty seamless. The repeatable robotic camera move allowed VFX supervisor Bret Culp and VFX producer @krispyp_123 to break apart Marco and the Pella’s structure around him by shooting a separate pass without him @expanseonprime #screamingfirehawks @sigmacanada @wfw_intl #canadiancinematographer

Working smarter not harder to move a 2000 lbs @techno_supertechno_technodolly down and up 2 flights of stairs with some mechanical advantage and last minute ramp welding. It was all worth it! The shot had a 50% ramp down in the middle while maintaining a 24fps bg. I saw the comp before leaving and it worked a charm with a little math and a great creative vision!

I was feeling a little nostalgic while flying around Toronto the other night with @heliofaview . The glory days of aerial filming (from a helicopter) is definitely past its peak. Once upon a time nearly every show had a line item for heli shots. Full package aerials definitely provide a high level of production value and a perspective you can't achieve any other way.

This is how @mjcherringtn his excellency @paulsteinberg and I started 2021! @wfw_intl #technodolly and seemingly endless roster of players. The technodolly was the perfect tool. Preloaded shot sequences, seconds to adjust for player heights and predictable consistent results. If the player held their mark every shot was a circled take.
